MOD/RSLAF KEY MESSAGE ON THE OUTCOME OF THE INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE ALLEGED STOLEN BABY AT 34 MILITARY HOSPITAL 26 SEPTEMBER 2019, ISSUE NO.1 ...

MOD/RSLAF KEY MESSAGE ON THE OUTCOME OF THE INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE ALLEGED STOLEN BABY AT 34 MILITARY HOSPITAL

1. MoD/RSLAF has recently followed media publications about an allegation of stolen baby against four medical workers at 34 Military Hospital. The allegation was levied by one Beneta Kargbo. Since the matter was being investigated, MoD/RSLAF was restrained in making any public statement about the accusation.

2. However, MoD/RSLAF would like the public to know that Director of Public Prosecution has recently proffered a legal opinion on matter, stating that the allegation could not be charged to court due to lack of evidence.

3. Therefore, MoD/RSLAF would now like the public to know its own side of the story. At about 1:15am on 16 November 2017, on account of labour pain, Beneta Kargbo was admitted to 34 Military Hospital and was given medical care by the duty nurses. Accompanied by her mother and husband (Mr Reginald Glenn Taylor), she was observed to have difficult labour.

4. Thus, Dr Thomasia George, who was the Doctor-in-Charge, was summoned to salvage the situation. Fortunately, at about 7:20am, Beneta Kargbo delivered a baby boy. Notwithstanding, the baby boy was pale and struggling for breathe. He was resuscitated by the medical team but did not survive.

5. On 22 November, 2017, Beneta Kargbo was discharged with a death certificate of the baby boy issued to both her and the husband. However, 14 months later Beneta Kargbo accused four medical workers of stealing her baby boy.

6. On 22 February, 2019 the Lumley Police Station requested the release of the four medical workers. Consequently, these medical workers were released to make statements to the police. However, Beneta Kargbo refused the police to obtain statement from her mother.

7. Thereafter, the case files were sent to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), who recently proffered the legal opinion, citing lack of evidence and hence exonerating all the four accused medical workers.

8. MoD/RSLAF considers the allegation as an attempt to dent the reputation of a hospital which has stood the test of time in terms of heath care delivery. MoD/RSLAF would, therefore, like to encourage the mass media to always verify their facts before publishing allegation to the public.
